Africa initiative of Technical University Munich: Cooperation in Medtech

New partnership in Ethiopia: The Technical University of Munich (TUM) has gained new partners with its Africa Initiative. In future, it will cooperate in medical technology with the Ethiopian Tegbare-id Polytechnic College (T-PTC) and the German Society for International Cooperation (GIZ). The agreement was signed on 15.04.2019 during a meeting between the Ethiopian Prime Minister and the Bavarian Prime Minister in Addis Ababa.

The partners want to work closely together in research, teaching and technology application. At the beginning, they organized the first “Ethiopian-German Networking Days on Medical Technology”. During the three-day event, science, business and politics will exchange ideas in the Ethiopian capital, including Bavarian Prime Minister Dr. Markus Söder. The first research priorities of the cooperation will be the development of new prostheses and a durable sterilizer for hospitals in rural areas.

In 2018, the TUM launched an initiative for long-term partnerships with African universities. The first agreement was concluded with the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Ghana. The initiative builds upon the 140 projects and exchange programmes in which the TUM already cooperates with institutions in 20 African countries.

The basis for the new partnership is the “MedTech OneWorld” program of the Chair of Medical Technology, which researches new technologies for the needs of developing countries. The chair has been working with the T-PTC and other Ethiopian partners on prostheses for several years now; these are manufactured with materials and tools that are available in the East African country. Several students who were in Addis Ababa for their final theses founded the “MedTech OneWord Students” group in 2018, in which around 50 members research new medical technology products on their own.
