Abstract: Prior research shows that firms can increase innovation performance by leveraging external sources of knowledge. However, our understanding regarding potential drawbacks of open innovation practices is still limited. In this paper, we investigate the relationship between formal R&D collaboration and the departure of skilled employees. Scientists and engineers in firms who interact with external partners in the context of R&D collaborations may increase their outside employment options, potentially resulting in higher rates of employee mobility to other firms and employee entrepreneurship. We examine our research question using a representative dataset that combines information from the Swedish Community Innovation survey (CIS) with employer-employee registry data. Our econometric analysis suggests that the use of research collaborations by firms increases outbound employee mobility, and in particular for highly qualified employees
