The Impostor Syndrome from Luxury Consumption

25 Jun 2018 -17:00 - 18:00
Technische Universität München, Arcisstraße 21
München,80333Germany

Abstract:The present research proposes that luxury consumption can be a double-edged sword: while luxury consumption can have positive consequences for individuals, it can also make consumers feel less authentic, producing what we call the impostor syndrome from luxury consumption. The impostor syndrome emerges due to the gap that consumers perceive between their true self and the self presented through luxury. It is more pronounced among consumers with low levels of psychological entitlement, it is consistent across income levels, and it…

Banking Crises and Corporate Innovation

28 Jun 2018 -12:00 - 13:00
Technische Universität München, Arcisstraße 21
München,80333Germany

(joint work with Ulrich Schüwer, University of Bonn) Abstract: We examine whether and how banking crises affect corporate innovations, using data on patent quantity, quality and portfolio structure of companies in manufacturing industries around the world over the period 1988 to 2012. We find that banking crises lead to relatively fewer patents in industries that depend more on external finance. A number of patent characteristics also indicate a negative effect of banking crises on innovation quality in these industries. This suggests…

An Application of Evolutionary Portfolio Theory to Factor Investing

03 Jul 2018 -10:00 - 11:15
Technische Universität München, Arcisstraße 21
München,80333Germany

An Application of Evolutionary Portfolio Theory to Factor Investing Abstract: The paper studies the dynamic interaction of factor investment strategies (e.g. the Fama-Frech factors MKT, HML, SMB, QMJ, WML,…). It suggests measures for the capacity of strategies and for the cross impact between strategies which we evaluate empirically in a large stock market universe. We find that the capacity of long-short strategies is lower than that for long-only strategies and that strategies interact like species in biological evolution. E.g. HML and…

Do University Entrepreneurship Programs Promote Entrepreneurship?

04 Jul 2018 -12:00 - 13:00
Technische Universität München, Arcisstraße 21
München,80333Germany

Abstract: Recently, many universities have developed programs to promote student entrepreneurship. However, relatively little is known about the impacts of such university initiatives. This paper examines how Stanford University’s entrepreneurship initiatives affected entrepreneurial activity using the Stanford Innovation Survey, a unique survey that asks the entrepreneurship activities of Stanford degree-holders. We examine Stanford University’s two major initiatives that were established in the mid 1990s - the Stanford Center for Entrepreneurial Studies at the Business School and the Stanford Technology Venture…

Merge Search for Production Scheduling in Open Pit Mining

10 Jul 2018 -17:00 - 18:00
Technische Universität München, Arcisstraße 21
München,80333Germany

Abstract Open pit mine planning requires the solution of very large optimisation problems. The instances are typically far too large for exact methods and finding good heuristic solutions is challenging. In this paper we discuss one such mine planning problem, the precedence constrained production scheduling problem (PCPSP). Matheuristics tackle such problems by using the machinery of mathematical programming in a heuristic framework. In this talk we focus on a new matheuristic that combines features from many different solutions, making it…
