The report is intended to rank start-up ecosystems within a certain community by their success rates and factors to find the most successful ecosystem in each branch. It bases itself in 2018 off of 10.000 founders from 45 ecosystems worldwide and generates the biggest database of start-up ecosystems available to date, including Munich for the fist time alongside fellow German ecosystems Berlin and Frankfurt am Main.
Alongside a general analysis of ecosystems, the report researches 12 different branches in which start-ups are active. Munich has been ranked as a world-wide-leading sector within 3 of these branches, including the financial technology; healthcare and insurance sectors. Institutions cited in the report as leading the charge to create and maintain these companies were the Technical University of Munich (TUM) and the LMU Munich .
