Summer School 2018: Sustainable Entrepreneurship – Theory and Practice

July 15 – July 27 in Munich

Sustainable entrepreneurship, with its combination of economic, social and ecological goals, is a powerful tool for tackling grand societal challenges. The International Summer School 2018 provides you with the theoretical and practical input you need to become a changemaker. Our objective: Inform – Inspire – Interact!

Benefit from cutting-edge research at a triple crown accredited business school and the rich experience of sustainable entrepreneurs. Get to grips with the theory and practice of founding a new sustainable business.

Work with dedicated academics and a diverse group of sustainable entrepreneurs from different industries, including fashion, food and energy. Participate in interactive workshops and learn to see societal challenges as entrepreneurial opportunities.

Collaborate with people from all over the world and generate creative entrepreneurial ideas for tackling the grand societal challenges of the 21st century. Work in small teams to develop your own business concept and become a changemaker.

The International Summer School 2018 includes an extensive supporting program. Together we will explore the vibrant entrepreneurial scene in Munich. You will have the opportunity to visit leading institutions in the field of sustainable entrepreneurship and meet the founders of purpose-driven companies and experience their innovative products first hand, for example a visit to a local sustainable brewery.

You can enjoy a true Bavarian experience in Munich and its stunning surroundings. The cultural program includes a welcome event in a beer garden, hiking in the Alps, a day trip to lake Chiemsee, a barbecue by the Isar river, an alternative bike tour of local hotspots and a great farewell party.

Prof. Dr. Frank Martin Belz

Chair of Corporate Sustainabilly
TUM School of Management

Frank-Martin Belz received his PhD in Business Administration from the University of St. Gallen (Switzerland). Since 2003, he holds the Chair of Corporate Sustainability at TUM School of Management. Frank-Martin Belz was the coordinator of the large-scale research project ‘EU-InnovatE’, focusing on how entrepreneurial action contribute to the transition towards more sustainable lifestyles. Frank-Martin Belz dedicates his research and teaching to sustainable entrepreneurship.

Prof. Dr. Nicola Breugst

Chair of Entrepreneurial Behavior
TUM School of Management

Nicola Breugst has a PhD in entrepreneurship from Friedrich-Schiller-Universität, Jena, and holds the Professorship of Entrepreneurial Behavior at TUM School of Management since 2012. In her research, she addresses questions of entrepreneurial affect, entrepreneurial motivation, and the collaboration in startup teams. She teaches in the undergraduate, graduate, and executive programs at TUM and aims at bringing together students and startups.

Ines Plum

UnternehmerTUM – Program Manager and Workshop Designer Executive Trainings

Ines Plum holds university degrees in Communications and Media, and European Studies from Heinrich-Heine Universität Düsseldorf and RWTH Aachen. Before joining UnternehmerTUM, she gained several years of professional experience in advertising and consultancy agencies. Since 2015, she works at UnternehmerTUM as a certified trainer focusing on creative idea generation techniques and presentation trainings.

Rebecca Preller

Entrepreneurship Research Institute
TUM School of Management

Rebecca Preller is a Research Associate and PhD candidate at the TUM Entrepreneurship Research Institute. Her research focuses on how entrepreneurial teams develop ideas into businesses over time. She teaches courses on business idea development at the Bachelor, Master, and PhD level as well as for corporate clients. Before starting her PhD program she worked as a strategy consultant serving clients with an innovation focus.

Roman Gaus

Co-Founder of Urban Farmers

Roman Gaus is a graduate from the University St.Gallen (HSG) in Switzerland, with MBA studies in Tel Aviv, Israel and Boston. Prior to becoming an entrepreneur, Roman’s career spans a 10 year corporate background in food & health companies, where he worked in various managerial positions across North America and Europe. In 2010, he founded the business ‘Urban Farmers AG’, a sustainable venture developing innovative re-circulating food growing systems.

Dr. Aline Menden

Co-Fonder of Endeva

Aline is one of the co-founders and managing directors of Endeva. She is an expert on inclusive business models. Over the past ten years, Aline has led and implemented a variety of research and consulting projects for a broad range of organisations, including large companies, NGOs, international organisations, and foundations. She holds a PhD on “Identifying Low-income Consumers as a Source of Innovation” from the TUM School of Management.

Torsten Schreiber

Founder of Africa Greentec

Torsten Schreiber is a self-made man and serial entrepreneur. Since 2000, he founded several internet-based new ventures and was engaged in a political party driving the digital agenda. For example, he (co-)founded the sustainable investment platform ’bettervest’, the start-up incubator ’Gründertaxi’ and ‚’RockmyStartup’, a consultancy for social businesses. Now, he is the co-founder and Managing Director of ’Africa GreenTech’.

Thomas Vatter

Founder of Vatter Fashion

Thomas Vatter studied business administration at the Universität of Mannheim and then worked in the product management at SevenOne Media before he founded his first internet start-up ’fellody’ in Zurich in 2011. In 2013, he founded the Munich based sustainable fashion brand ’VATTER’ and is Managing Director of the Vatter Fashion GmbH.


The program fee for the Summer School includes hotel accommodation from July 15 to 27. The hotel is located in the city center, just five minutes from Munich’s central railroad station and ten minutes from the main campus of TUM. Rooms are for three to six people, with single rooms available upon request. Accommodation includes free wireless internet access, a breakfast buffet each day and access to a games room and bar.
