The role of Family Businesses in Germany

From winter semester 2018/19 TUM School of Management will be offering its Master in Management and its Master in Management & Innovation at the newly launched TUM Campus in Heilbronn. Students of these two Master’s programs can choose from specializations, which are offered exclusively in Heilbronn. One of them is the specialization “Management of Family Businesses”. The specialization give students the chance to learn about how family-led companies operate and how they are managed against the backdrop of growing digitization. The city of Heilbronn and the surrounding region, home to a large number of entrepreneurial firms and hidden champions, many of which are family-run businesses, offer the perfect environment in which to pursue these specializations.

Why family businesses? 91 percent of all private companies in Germany count as family-controlled. Most of the jobs available in the private sector are provided by family led businesses. Even during the finance and Euro-crisis 500 of the biggest family companies managed to increase the number of employees. This is an example why family businesses are said to have a stabilizing effect on the economy.

Moreover, they are especially important for rural regions. Large corporations are often located in urban areas, whereas family businesses are frequently rooted in their home locations, even though they have become a global player. The screw manufacturer Würth, founded in 1945, is one example, they still have their headquarters in Künzelsau, which is a small village east of Heilbronn.

The new TUM Campus Heilbronn invites students to be one of the first to study at a newly launched campus and choose unique specializations like “Management of Family Businesses”.
